PBwiki announces voice chat — and it is awesome

Ok, I can’t control myself any more.

Today, we’re officially announcing voice chat in PBwiki. This means that you can now talk to anyone viewing your wiki page. It takes about 15 seconds to set up on your PBwiki — and it’s free.

The details: We teamed with YackPack to embed their WalkieTalkie Widget that lets you chat on any PBwiki page. To get it, just edit any PBwiki page, click Insert Plugin >> Chat >> YackPack voice chat.

Here’s a video of how voice chat works in PBwiki

(To use this video on your site, just visit http://blip.tv/file/196824.)

Imagine using voice chat to let students talk about research they’re doing. Or to talk about whether a certain paragraph should be in your business proposal. Or to pick the perfect place for dinner from a list on your PBwiki. It’s available now on your wiki, free.

A PBwiki Press Conference — April 12th
We’re holding a press conference (using the voice chat, of course) tomorrow, April 12th, at http://press.pbworks.com.

  • 2pm PT: For technology journalists and other tech folks
  • 6pm PT: For educators, educational journalists, and anyone who likes to read books and learn!

From the entire team at PBwiki and YackPack, enjoy voice chat on your wiki!

PS–To post about this on your own blog, visit our Media Resources page for videos, screenshots, and more

  1. Hi Judy,

The YackPack plug-in insert is under “Chat”.

    1) Insert plug-in
    2) Chat
    3) YackPack voice chat

    Give it a shot!

  2. Judy,

No problem. It’s not on your Templates page — it’s on your Plugin page. To get there:

    1. Edit a page
    2. Click Insert Plugin
    3. Mouse over “Chat”
    4. Choose YackPack voice chat

    That’s it!

  3. I a librarian at the elementary level pk-5th grade. I have a book club composed of 3-5th graders. They love to be posting new comments. We just finished a book and some students want to keep on reading the second book on the series but I don’t have time to stay afterschool with them and summer is coming very soon. I plan to use the yack pack on my wiki so they can communicate with me.

  4. Would someone mind going to my wiki:

    http://mame.pbwiki.com

to tell me where the “insert plug-in” button is located? I went into EDIT and I don’t see all of the buttons that are shown in the video on YackPack. I know I’m missing something obvious but I can’t find it! Thank you for your help!

  5. Judy, you are using the ‘classic’ editor. To use the new editor, go to your wiki’s front page and click ‘settings’ on the top right. Then choose ‘editor’ from the navigation bar on the left. Change your editor from ‘Classic’ to ‘Point-and-Click’

Clicking to edit a page now will yield the new editor, along with the option to ‘insert plug-in’.

    Enjoy 🙂

  6. I wasn’t able to view the video…. it was a file type my computer didn’t recognize.

  7. This seems like a wonderful feature–but when I click on insert plugin, and then chat, my only option is chat room.
I have five wikis in pbwiki and none of them seem to have the option of the yack pack chat.
I’m giving a workshop and demonstrating pbwiki on Tuesday, so I’d sure like to have this figured out….
    The workshop wiki is

    Thanks–
    Kim

  8. Hi Kim,
It’s not that you need an upgrade- Yack Pack is currently down, so we’ve pulled it from out interface. Sorry about that!
